School Outreach
Bring the Museum to Your Classroom
Museum docents use artifacts, replicas, and costumes to create an entertaining, interactive program at your school. We can present two back-to-back sessions of the same program in one visit.
Fee: $25.00 per school visit. The visit may include two sessions.
To Schedule an Outreach Program:
- Complete a Registration form
(If you register on-line the form will be e-mailed to the Museum. Or you may download a registration form and mail it to the Museum.)
- You will receive a confirmation letter within two weeks offering you a program date.
- Sign your acceptance letter and fax it back to the Museum.
- If you have not been contacted by the Museum within two weeks of your request you should call the Education Department. Your request has probably not been received.

School Outreach Programs Available
Grade K - 2
A Day in the Lives of Two Children Long Ago
Have your students ever seen high-button shoes, a writing slate, washboard or stereoscope? A costumed docent shares these objects and talks about what life was like for children 100 years ago.
45 minute presentation (Maximum 20 students)
Patriotic Traditions of Times Past
This “suitcase” presentation shares the excitement of a 4 th of July celebration in Ventura County circa 1900. See through the eyes of a child how patriotism was demonstrated in the parades, speeches, music and games of the era.

Grade 3 & 4
Chumash Food Gathering and Preparation
U sing authentic artifacts and replicas students will learn about traditional Chumash foods during this hands-on presentation. Students will pound acorns, use a digging stick, and learn how to cook in a basket as they explore the relationship of the Chumash people to the land and sea around them.
1 hour presentation (Maximum 35 students)
Grades 3 & 4
Chumash Technology
Students will learn how the Chumash used plants and other natural materials to create sophisticated tools and technology. This participatory session includes discussion of boat building, bead making, and basketry.

Grade 4
Rancho Days
Costumed docents bring to life a typical day on a California rancho in the 1840s. Students get a taste of the rancho life through music, costumes and hands-on demonstrations.
1 hour presentation (Maximum 35 students)
