The Past on a Plate: The Photographs of John Calvin Brewster

Ventura County life between 1874 and 1909 is captured on the glass plate negatives of Ventura’s first photographer. Brewster’s images,
as well as artifacts from then, provide a fascinating look at that time period’s streets, neighborhoods, movers & shakers, and ordinary citizens.

The exhibit runs April 25-August 17 at new 89 California Street site.

Expansion Project

A Historic Moment

The Museum of Ventura County is a place where people of all ages and backgrounds gather to learn more about their community and enjoy exhibits and cultural programs. To serve the region well into the future, a $12 million expansion plan is underway. As we begin construction, we are asking the community to help us bring the project to completion. The new Museum expects to attract over 100,000 visitors per year, nearly double current attendance.

Located in the historic downtown district, the Museum is part of a vibrant community of easily accessible restaurants, shops and galleries. Local artists will be celebrated in special exhibitions in the new galleries, which will also provide a venue for tours, art classes, concerts and lectures.

Building a Place to Learn, to See and to Grow
Expanded gallery spaces, as well as a new education center and event pavillion will provide welcoming places for audiences of all ages to enjoy receptions, lectures and educational experiences. “Meet me at the Museum” will become a phrase heard countywide.

The Museum will host important traveling exhibitions, making priceless collections available to the public. In addition, one new gallery will be dedicated to the Museum’s permanent collection, while another will display items fromthe library collection. Finally, the Huntsinger Gallery’s exhibits on Ventura County history will be reinstalled.

The new Berry Research Library housing the Museum’s collection of 150,000 documents, books, maps, historic photographs, manuscripts, electronic histories and other priceless items – will be a valuable resource for local and national researchers. A comfortable, state-of-the art reading room will accommodate visitors, while new storage facilities will ensure proper care of the collection.

Please check back soon to see new developments in expansion project.
