The Museum of Ventura County Campus Continues to Evolve
Phase One Completed – Phase Two Planned
Phase One of our most recent transformation was completed in 2010 and included:
- A spacious new Front Plaza with water feature, open-columned entrance off Main Street, and eight paneled mosaic Timeline of Ventura County History, created by artist Larissa Strauss from more than 45,000 pieces of cut glass.
- Beautiful mature palms and agaves joined by new landscaping and trees in the Plaza and surrounding museum grounds.
- The new river-rock walled, state-of-the-art Martin V. and Martha K. Smith Event Pavilion, used for lectures, programs and a variety of museum events. With 3,500 square feet, it can seat 200 for dinner, with the option to tent the front Plaza for an additional 140 guests. The Pavilion and Plaza can also be rented for outside events; click here for information.
- Renovation of the original museum building, including reconfigured exhibit areas, a new Sculpture Gallery, the reopened Smith Gallery of George Stuart Historical Figures®, a remodeled lobby, and new restrooms.
Phase Two Plans Approved

The completed and approved plans for Phase Two include more galleries, an Education Center, significantly expanded Research Library, larger Museum Store, expansive collections storage, and offices. Construction will begin when the museum has secured funding at a level that ensures completion, according to Museum of Ventura County Executive Director Tim Schiffer and Board Chair Jeff Smith.
